Lib Dems Reverse Councillors' Massive Pay-Hike

8.00.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Wed 16th May 2007

Liberal Democrat councillors have today kept their first election pledge: to reverse the massive 52% pay rises for councillors voted through by the Tories.

This comes less than two weeks after the Liberal Democrats took power in Eastbourne with a landslide victory. Councillor Troy Tester said "This shows that we mean business. We did not make our campaign pledges lightly and we intend to keep each and every one of them."

"I voted against these obscene pay rises before the election and I voted against them again after the election. Now they are history. It is totally inappropriate for councillors to award themselves such large rises when the council tax payers who have to foot the bill are receiving rises of only 2 to 5% this year."
